The story of Saints Raphael, Nicholas, and Irene
It is a testament to faith and divine providence. Martyred in the 15th century on the island of Lesbos, their lives and gruesome deaths at the hands of Ottoman invaders were lost to history for nearly 500 years. The historical records of their martyrdom were intentionally destroyed by the invaders. The abbot, Raphael, was savagely tortured, tied to a tree and his jaw was sawn off. His companion, Nicholas, a deacon, died from the shock of witnessing the torture of his elder. The young Irene, only 12 years old, was subjected to unspeakable horrors, including having her arm cut off before she was burned alive in a large clay cask.
In the mid-20th century, a miraculous event unfolded. The saints themselves began appearing in dreams and visions to local residents, revealing the forgotten details of their martyrdom and leading the faithful to the very location of their relics. Today, their monastery in Griva serves as a beacon of hope and a place of pilgrimage. Built on the very site where they gave their lives, it is a spiritual haven where pilgrims can venerate their holy relics and feel the power of their presence.
